I know what you’re probably thinking: why on earth would I want to drink vinegar? After all, its strong odor can turn your stomach before you even place the stuff to your mouth. Well, apple cider vinegar is a powerful ingredient with some surprising benefits. So if you’re willing to get past the smell, you’ll find this beverage to be a powerful health drink.
#1) Prescribed By Hippocrates
Hippocrates, who many consider to be one of the leading pioneers of western medicine, often prescribed apple cider vinegar to his patients to treat a broad range of ailments, including fever, nausea, insomnia and vomiting. Patients were shocked to discover the healing and rejuvenating effects this natural substance offered. “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food,” said Hippocrates.
#2) Weight Loss
A 2009 study published in the journal Bioscience, Biotechnology, and Biochemistry found regular consumption of apple cider vinegar to encourage weight loss. Moderately overweight participants were asked to consume acetic acid – the main component in apple cider vinegar – over the course of 12 weeks. Researchers were shocked to discover that participants had experienced a “significant” decline in body weight, fat, waist size and triglycerides.
#3) Lowers Blood Pressure
High blood pressure (hypertension) is a serious condition in which a person’s blood pressure is 140/90 mmHg or above the majority of the time. The increased pressure stresses the arteries and organs, while increasing the risk of heart disease. However, regular consumption of apple cider vinegar is a safe and effective way to lower your blood pressure. Research suggests that calcium, magnesium and potassium is required to maintain healthy blood pressure levels; apple cider vinegar contains a healthy dose of all three of these nutrients.
#4) Regulates Blood Sugar Levels
A fourth reason why you should drink apple cider vinegar is because it helps regulate blood sugar levels. One study found it to improve insulin sensitivity by 19-34% and reduce blood sugar by 34% when 50 grams or more of white bread is consumed.
#5) Cures Heartburn
The next time you have a bad case of heartburn, try drinking 1-2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar mixed in a glass of water. It may sound a little backwards being that vinegar is highly acidic, but it’s actually an effective way to treat the heartburn. Most people report relief of their heartburn within minutes after drinking apple cider vinegar.
There are a few things you should know before adding apple cider vinegar to your diet. For starters, don’t drink it plain. Apple cider vinegar is too acidic, and drinking it plain could burn your esophagus and/or wear down the enamel of your teeth. Instead, mix 1-2 tablespoons in a tall glass of water, drinking this beverage daily. Also, talk with your doctor before drinking this beverage if you have bone density problems.
